Schad’s (Poloncarz/Zellner/Schad) candidate – Hadar Bordon –  came to neither either, although she promised to support the ADC endorsed slate.  Instead she continued her campaign and has now filed petitions with about 900 signatures, circulated by students from UB, and people from other towns.  The endorsed ADC slate (Bucki/Spoth) got over 1400 signatures.

U.S. Attorney: Wheatfield Man Had Seven Homemade Bombs in Garage

The stepson of Niagara County Legislature Chairman William Ross was seriously injured in the blast in Ross’ garage.

Seven homemade bombs, including one packed with nails, explosive powder and BB pellets, were found in the Wheatfield garage where a man suffered a severe leg injury in a blast Tuesday, U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. announced Thursday.

“What makes this case noteworthy is the fact that the explosive devices, at least in one case, appears to contain shrapnel,” Hochul said during a late-afternoon news conference.

Michael C. O’Neill, 45, of Wheatfield has been charged with possession of an unregistered destructive device. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, Hochul said. He emphasized that the initial charge could be expanded as the result of the ongoing investigation by federal and local law enforcement officials.

Accused of thefts from History Museum, former volunteer shifts blame

“This is an institution that has had massive problems with theft, inventory control and security going back 50 years.” –Daniel J. Witek, former History Museum volunteer accused of stealing valuable letters

“This is an institution that has had massive problems with theft, inventory control and security going back 50 years.” –Daniel J. Witek, former History Museum volunteer accused of stealing valuable letters

On a May morning two years ago, David Lowenherz emailed the Buffalo History Museum, curious about whether important documents from its A. Conger Goodyear collection had gone missing.

A few days earlier, Lowenherz, an internationally known autograph collector in Manhattan, had offered to buy five Goodyear letters and postcards from a man who claimed he had 40 more for sale.

By most accounts, Lowenherz’s email that day was the first hint that valuable letters from the Buffalo tycoon turned philanthropist might have been stolen from the museum’s archives.

And it wasn’t the first, or even second time, important documents and artifacts reportedly went missing from the Nottingham Terrace institution.

Daniel Jude Witek, a former volunteer at the museum, is the man accused of stealing the Goodyear letters. But in a twist, Witek has become the accuser.

Police: 3 Dead in Movie Theater Shooting, Including Gunman

Police tape surrounds the scene following a shooting at a movie theater Thursday, July 23, 2015, in Lafayette, La. (Treylan Arceneaux via AP)
Police tape surrounds the scene following a shooting at a movie theater Thursday, July 23, 2015, in Lafayette, La.

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — A gunman opened fire at a movie theater in Louisiana on Thursday evening, killing two people and injuring at least seven others before fatally shooting himself, officials said.

The gunman, a 58-year-old “lone white male,” fired his weapon “numerous times” before shooting himself at the Grand Theatre in Lafayette, city Police Chief Jim Craft told a news conference.

Authorities identified the shooting suspect as John Russel Houser. It appears that he turned the gun on himself after unsuccessfully trying to flee by blending in with the crowd, according to police.

Earlier in the evening, Acadian Ambulance Vice President Clay Henry had told The Associated Press that the shooter was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital.

Craft said those who were injured had injuries ranged from non-life-threatening to critical.

There were about 100 people in the theater at the time of the shooting, Sgt. Brooks David of the Louisiana State Police told CNN. Lafayette is about 60 miles west of Baton Rouge.

The shooting happened about 20 minutes into a 7 p.m. showing of the movie “Trainwreck,” The Louisiana Advertiser quoted theatergoer Katie Domingue as saying.

“We heard a loud pop we thought was a firecracker,” Domingue told the newspaper. Domingue said she saw “an older white man” standing up and shooting down into the theater, but not in her direction.

“He wasn’t saying anything. I didn’t hear anybody screaming either,” Domingue said.

Domingue told the newspaper she heard about six shots before she and her fiance ran to the nearest exist, leaving behind her shoes and purse.

The Louisiana shooting occurred three years after James Holmes entered a crowded movie theater in suburban Denver and opened fire during the premier of a Batman film, killing 12 people and injuring 70 others.

A jury last week quickly convicted Holmes on 165 counts of murder, attempted murder and other charges, rejecting defense arguments that he was insane and suffering delusions that drove him to the July 20, 2012, attack.

Prosecutors said Holmes planned and carried out the massacre to assuage the pain of his failures in graduate school and in romance. Defense lawyers said schizophrenia had been growing inside Holmes’ mind for years and eventually overwhelmed him, creating a delusion that he could improve his self-worth by killing others and absorbing their value.

Glen Park Art Festival Expects Record Crowd

Glen Park Art Festival2

In its sixth year, popular Williamsville festival has grown tenfold to 120 booths

Williamsville, N.Y. – Plans for the sixth annual Glen Park Art Festival on July 25th and 26th are almost complete.  Festival Chair, Sharon Rich, promises that this year’s event will surpass last year’s in size and fun.

Rapidly becoming known throughout Western New York as one of the top art festivals in the area, the show is situated on Glen Avenue in beautiful Glen Park with its waterfalls and ponds providing the perfect setting.  The main entrance which is easiest for the handicapped, is on Mill Street.  Entrances are also available on Rock Street, which is steep, and through Glen Park on Main Street.

Since its founding in 2010, the Festival has grown from 15 tents to over 120 booths. Fine art, sculptures, pottery, specialized photography, quality jewelry and unique crafts from Western New York’s top artists will be available.

On our community stage, the Entertainment Committee, chaired by Deborah Doucette with the assistance of Mark Weber, have planned a variety of top local artists as well as dance exhibitions.  Bring a chair and enjoy a relaxing performance

Many of the Village’s top restaurants are putting together a selection of foods for every appetite, Sweet Jenny’s ice cream and The Dickster’s Hot Dogs will complete the menu.

Older students have arranged their own arts and crafts show which has become increasingly popular. Students offer many items for sale.

The younger crowd will have loads of fun doing the many crafts and games being offered by the Town of Amherst Youth and Recreation Department and the Village’s Youth and Rec. Committee.

Mayor Brian Kulpa, Dick Rich and Sharon Rich, the founders of the Festival, envisioned a small community event held in a beautiful setting.  Mrs. Rich explained the phenomenal growth by pointing out that the Festival has retained the feel of a community event and artists know that they and their work are appreciated.  “Our committee truly believes in supporting our artists and vendors.  They bring a unique quality of life to our community,” said Mrs. Rich.

The show is sponsored by the Town of Amherst, Village of Williamsville and the Williamsville Business Association.  The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Fridaynight will feature a kickoff concert from 7 to 9 p.m. on Glen Avenue near Mill Street with entertainment by the Dixieland jazz group The Fredtown Stompers.
