Our Comptroller Says “No” To The Supervisor

I sent a FOIL request to the Amherst Comptroller to find out if our golf course made a profit last year or if we once again, ended up in the loser column.  In the history of our golf course we have NEVER made a profit for a variety of reasons.

The Comptroller sent me sheets of paper with the figures from last year and the year before but no simple, clear answer as to whether we made a profit this past year.  I went to her office after the FOIL time was past due and was told I will get the information when she gives it to the Town Board and the Supervisor.

The FOIL I sent overrides her power to keep things from the public.  She made it clear the Supervisor would not get the report even if he asked for it before she was ready to give it out.  Now that’s power.

The Comptroller reports to the Board and is required under Municipal Law to file monthly reports of income and expenses. If this is being done it should be easy to see if the golf course made a profit or not last season. If there isn’t this info available by April then I’d say it’s time to get a more competent person into that job. Someone should ask for the last 12 months of reconciled bank statements for the golf accounts to be sure they are up to date. Last I heard she was very behind with all of the bank reconciliations and the Board had no idea because there are no controls in place to monitor this during the year.
