Amherst Board Panel Will Review Two-Term Limit For Elected Officials

Council Members Mark Manna and Steven Sanders introduced a resolution Monday asking the Government Study Committee to review town term limits for elected officials and provide recommendations.

“We’re committed to having term limits,” Manna said. “The question is, is two the right amount?”

Term-limit rules were adopted before residents voted to downsize the board to five members. Six members are currently serving, but another seat will be eliminated during the next Town Board election. The current board is the first to be subject to the town’s two-term limit. The previous council members who passed the term-limits law had grand-fathered in all the previous terms they served, including the one they were serving at the time.

Now that the Board is actually facing being ousted by the two term law they are scrambling.  Watch how they scurry.

What a poor excuse to circumvent the term limits that were in place when Mr. Manna and Mr. Sanders ran for office. Why does it matter that the town board has downsized since enacting term limits?

I respect people who are willing to serve in public office, but it is amazing that once people get a little taste of power they simply don’t want to leave. Mr. Manna obviously loves serving in elected office as during the 4 years he has served on the town board he has considered running for county legislator, state senator and Congress. Eight years is enough time to accomplish something on the town board and then allow a new person to step forward.

Don’t forget Mr. Marlette, who was too smart to introduce this resolution and expose himself.

I know Mr.Wolf once considered running for office, its a shame he didn’t have the courage to do so. Maybe he should run next year.

It certainly does take courage to run for office and I actually did run for office last year and lost. It was a good experience and I have not ruled out giving it a shot again in the future.

How about you jsmith, have you run before or are you considering running for elected office?

No,I’m far too old! You should run and make term limits a central theme of your campaign, see of the voters embrace it.
