When I interviewed Barbara Schwartz Nuchereno back in September one of the first questions I asked her was whether she would continue the work of the different courts and programs Judge Farrell started to help people who are suffering from various drug and/or emotional problems.
Her answer was a resounding, “Yes” because she is also the kind of person who understands the needs of people who are hurting from problems they have little control over. She said she is very lucky to be seeking an office which has these special programs started by Judge Farrell.
Ms Nuchereno said it is rare to have these kinds of opportunities to help someone who comes before a judge to be given a second chance to be helped instead of being fined or imprisoned. She feels most people understand it is much better to give a second chance to someone who will do better in a rehab program rather than sending them to jail where they will likely come out an angry, hardened criminal who could be a bigger problem to society.
There have been many individuals who have gone through Judge Farrell’s programs who have proven this is true. Judge Farrell should be honored for all he has done to help so many people straighten out their lives.
