Williamsville Couple Given Probation on Charges Related to Medical Practice

A Williamsville couple convicted of filing a false tax return and receiving and delivering misbranded drugs were each sentenced Monday to one year of probation by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Shaheen Hassanali, 45, convicted of filing a false tax return, was ordered to pay restitution totaling $248,606 to the IRS, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Her husband, Riyaz Hassanali, 57, was convicted of receiving and delivering misbranded drugs, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Maura K. O’Donnell said that for the tax years 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, Shaheen Hassanali filed false joint income tax returns for herself and her husband, in which she substantially underreported the income earned from her husband’s medical practice.
