Williamsville Proposal For Backyard Chickens Caps Number of Fowl, Sets Rules For Coops

Residents seeking to build a chicken coop would be subject to 14 conditions, including approval of a special-use permit by the Zoning Board of Appeals.

In addition, coops must be at least 15 feet from any property line and feed must be stored in secure, rodent-proof containers.

The proposed law is modeled on the Town of Amherst’s 2013 law allowing chickens. A public hearing on the proposed law is scheduled for June 11 during the Village Board’s regular meeting.

The issue was raised in February, when a village resident approached the board expressing an interest in raising chickens.
